Superior Credit Union dedicates $500,000 to first-time homebuyer grants

LIMA — Superior Credit Union is once again stepping up to support aspiring homeowners with a $500,000 commitment to first-time homebuyer grants.

The funds are earmarked for the ninth year of the SuperiorFirst Program, which provides down-payment assistance to qualifying members.

Starting January 20, Superior Credit Union and the Superior Foundation will begin using the funds to help first-time buyers with grants of up to $2,000, with 250 awards available during the 2026 program cycle.

The typical home value in Lima is about $143,250, up around 5.2% over the past year, according to Zillow’s Home Value Index. Across Allen County, the typical home value is roughly $179,659, up about 7.0% over the last year.

Homes across the county remain relatively affordable compared with national norms, though entry-level buyers often still face challenges accumulating down payments and closing costs.

In 2025, the credit union reported helping about 200 members purchase their first homes through the same program.

Superior Credit Union president and CEO Phil Buell said purchasing a first home can be overwhelming.

“We’re delighted to provide funds that help create homeownership opportunities for our members. Purchasing your home generates long-term wealth and we are committed to helping members realize their dream of owning their home,” Buell said.
